PELI, is a proven leadership development model that builds the capacity of families, school staff, community members, and administrators to work together to increase student achievement.
Phase One consists of three seminars and has been implemented in over 45 schools and 18 school districts in Minnesota.
Seminar I: “Building Personal Missions to Increase Student Achievement”
Upon completion of this seminar participants have an understanding of:
- How the words we use can create barriers between parents and educators.
- The many places education happens in our communities.
- The abundance of resources all stakeholders contribute to increasing student achievement.
- Roles people play in creating high-quality education.
- Developing a personal mission for increasing student achievement for all students.
Seminar II: “Building Relationships to Increase Student Achievement”
Upon completion of this seminar participants have an understanding of:
- The need for building strong relationships to increase student achievement.
- Using a “tool box” of dialogue skills for building effective relationships.
- The value of tapping the expertise and experience of the educational community to expand the knowledgebase for increasing student achievement.
- Assessing school cultures to determine ways they can be more conducive to building strong relationships.
- Developing a shared mission that incorporates the personal visions of team members.
Seminar III: “Democratic Organizing to Increase Student Achievement”
Upon completion of this seminar participants have an understanding of:
- Ways to implement the group mission by using a strategy for involving all stakeholders.
- The four components of “Democratic Organizing:”
- Commitment
- Spirit
- Base-building
- Action
- Developing an action plan to which each person can be committed and is willing to be held accountable.
Phase Two is a three-part curriculum that helps guide school teams through the process of imbedding the strategies of Project Empowerment into school improvement plans and site plans.
- Session one is led by Project Empowerment staff
- Session two is self-guided by the team’s site coordinator.
- Session three, Project Empowerment staff returns during as each team finalizes and evaluates their newly-created action plan.
