Program Directors'
Let’s face it, program directors already know the score…out-of-school-time activities provide opportunities for children to pursue their interests and passions, be active, and receive academic support. Overall, these programs contribute to assisting a student to develop skills and envision the next step on their individual journeys: from elementary school to attainment of a college degree.
Yet, low income students and students of color are less likely than their white, middle class counterparts to enroll in such activities. In order to increase awareness about and participation in enrichment opportunities, MMEP has published an annual program guide since 1989.
My programs always fill up. Why should I list in the Guide?
In the two decades we have published the Guide the one constant we hear from program directors is the desire to increase diversity of participants. And for more than two decades program directors have consistently told us that they can attribute increased diversity in enrollments to listing in the Academic Enrichment Guide [AEG].
In the past year, thousands of students and adults have learned that they can use the Guides as a reference to programs throughout Minnesota---we already have almost a thousand pre-orders for the 2010 edition. Participating in the Guide means you are reaching a diverse audience desiring news about your program.
What do I need to do?
In the past, a $150 charge per listing was assessed to offset production costs of the Guide. However, we are now asking that in lieu of an advertising fee, programs reserve an equal amount for a scholarship for a student of color.
We also ask that programs hold two positions open past the regularly posted application deadline for students of color, and increase the diversity and/or cultural literacy of your staff.
If you agree to those three requests the next step is to create a record in our database and complete our online program listing. [Refer to download available on this webpage]. That’s it! Your program will be included in our online database and in our 2010 printed Guide, and reach thousands of Minnesotans.
